We all have our Christmas traditions; stockings, pumpkin pie, cookies for Santa, but here in Nashville, we have a truly special tradition that keeps spreading throughout more and more of our households. This holiday-filled, light-hearted and  SO kid-friendly tradition is Nashville Ballet’s The Nutcracker at Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC.)

Imagine taking your child, your loved one, your friend – yourself to a winter wonderland filled as much with holiday wonder as Santa’s bag is filled with toys. Picture a world of Christmas dreams, gorgeous scenery, the most beautiful of dance and the symphonic music of Tchaikovsky, including the Sugar Plum Fairy. That is the feeling of this Ballet in a NUTshell.

Nashville Ballet Artistic Director & CEO Paul Vasterling, has geniusly filled Nashville imaginations and hearts with his creative version of Nutcracker since 1989. The Ballet is lightly personalized with subtle hints of our own city and state, like a framed photograph of Andrew Jackson in the great hall of Clara’s family home. In the great hall is where her Uncle Drosselmeyer’s gift of a large Nutcracker magically becomes a handsome prince who takes dear sweet Clara on a magical adventure to meet the Snow Queen, Sugar Plum fairy and a great number of other magical events and characters. The audience is left wondering one thing; Was it a dream?

“Part of the reason Nashville’s Nutcracker is so special is that there is a broad appeal that spans generations,” Paul Vasterling, Nashville Ballet Artistic Director & CEO, said. ”It’s not often that a piece of work can do that. At its core, Nashville’s Nutcracker explores themes of home, tradition and imagination—ideas that resonate regardless of age. It’s easy to understand why children are so drawn to the sheer enchantment of the production. But for adults, in particular, it sparks beautifully nostalgic memories of youth and a more innocent time in our lives.”

Every year, Vasterling uses his special creative touch to change or add to the Ballet, making it something different and new each and every year, so that each year families look forward to their own tradition, to see what’s new and wonderful with their friend Clara this year. One hint, this year includes snow; and not only on the stage!

And every year, the Nashville Ballet’s Professional Dance Company  and children of the School of Nashville Ballet bring the best of ballet, magic and Christmas,  bringing us the spirit of the holidays with children dancers all the way from what looks like 4 or five year olds. Enjoy the photos of the precious young dancers who make our Nutcracker the best of the best.
